Hi, I’m Sherard, and it’s a pleasure!

How I Describe Myself:

Ambitious, thinker, reader, writer, photographer, INFP, third culture kid with everything to prove, articulate, independent, list maker (cough), perpetually stuck between a silk tie and red chucks, observant, nervous, shy. Basically, Helga from Hey Arnold without the anger management issues.

How Everyone Else Describes Me:

A sweet, good-natured guy who’s always laughing and smiling, and a great shoulder to (physically) lean on. An obvious Mikey from Recess, but in Vince’s body.

Writing Philosophy:

I believe there’s not enough laughter in the world. If I can make you laugh out loud at least once from a short story or essay that I’ve written, then I’ve done my job as a writer. By form, I’m a minimalist. Also, I love commas.

There is no one reason as to how I became a writer. The most plausible was that my mother was an immigrant to America, and people made fun of her growing up because of her funny accent so she instilled in me an importance on mastering the English language. Another reason might have been that as a traveling only child in the 90s, my choice was Gameboy or Books, and books didn’t die on you in the middle of beating your own high score. Not to mention I could really piss my parents off by reading under the covers at night when I was supposed to be sleeping—hard to do that with a Gameboy while you’re holding a flashlight. Only older cousins and the cool kids on the block got away with stuff like that. Allegedly.

Photography Philosophy:

I feel like there are two preconceived notions about pulling out a camera: 1) It’s only to capture a specially marked period in someone’s life, or 2) It’s only to capture the youth and vitality of oneself or one’s group of friends. The world is so much more than that and it can be said that I try to demonstrate this by photography that displays the human figure dwarfed by its surroundings.

Portrait photography I view the same way I view gifts: it must be of a composition they would enjoy, and that I would enjoy, but most importantly it also displays what I think of when I think about them and their personality.
